Valentine’s Day in Ukraine and worldwide is celebrated annually on February 14. Even after Ukraine’s shift to the New Julian calendar, the holiday’s date remained unchanged.
According to legend, Saint Valentine, a priest in the 3rd century, pursued natural sciences and medicine alongside his calling. In those distant times, ordinary soldiers were forbidden from marrying, as it was thought to hinder their service to the empire. Defying this decree, Valentine secretly wedded willing couples, landing him in prison. Even behind bars, he continued healing people and spreading Christianity. When the emperor learned of this, he ordered Valentine’s beheading, which took place on February 14.
