Description of the Board Game Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City

This is a large-scale strategy game with miniatures, where gangs vie for control of the city. The game was co-created by renowned game designer Eric M. Lang, known for the exceptional “Blood Rage”.

Players take on the roles of leaders of one of Night City’s many gangs. You’ll recruit new members, seize territories, battle rivals, and face off against corporations in various card-driven narrative scenarios. Your actions affect not only your game and your opponents but the city itself. Each gang has unique attributes and goals, offering players diverse gameplay experiences.

Gameplay Overview

The game is structured simply. On your turn, you pick and perform a couple of actions from a list:

  • Activate one type of miniature.
  • Build a base, from which you can spawn new miniatures.
  • Upgrade your deck, discarding an old card and adding a more powerful new one.

These actions are quick: choose, execute, pass the turn.

The core gameplay revolves around activating miniatures. When activated, you can move all miniatures of one type across the board and then perform a unique action tied to that type. There are three types:

  • Solos (fighters) can attack opponents (usually to score points).
  • Techies purchase unique fighters or cards that grant victory points.
  • Netrunners advance a hacking token along a special track, earning points and occasionally causing trouble for rivals.

Player interaction is present—you can attack each other. Combat is straightforward: each player plays a combat card, revealing them simultaneously; the higher attack value wins, and special card effects may trigger. Interestingly, some cards have effects like “gain 1 point if you lose the fight,” so even a loss against a stronger foe can pay off.

The board also features special locations where you can displace rivals. Each area tallies the number of each player’s miniatures; the player with the most can pass on their turn to claim resources for controlling it. Even without a majority, you can still snag a small reward when passing (passing is necessary to refresh your available actions).

The game ends with the player who amasses the most “Street Cred” winning—or if a narrative epilogue condition is met.
