About the Board Game Mycelia

How often do you think about mushrooms while picking them or strolling along a forest path? They’re not just some "plant"—unlike animals or plants, the fungal kingdom teems with astonishing, invisible life. What we see above ground and call mushrooms are merely the fruiting bodies of mycelium, a hidden root-like network of fine threads. Starting their life cycle with growth, mushrooms later release spores that sprout in new areas, forming mycelium. That’s exactly what you’ll do in this extraordinary game, "Mycelia."

A Quick Look at the Rules

The gameplay recreates the mushroom life cycle: reproduction, growth, decay, and rebirth. Earn points by growing mushrooms, expanding your mycelium network with spores, and triggering decay for unique bonuses.

Before the game begins, a star-shaped board is formed from six triangular tiles. Players take turns placing their mother mycelium on it, receiving five boards in their color and three mushroom cards. On your turn, you can perform two different actions from six options:

  • Movement lets you shift your mother mycelium figure across the board up to two tiles, but you can’t move to tiles occupied by other players’ mother mycelia.
  • Expansion allows you to add new triangular tiles from the stack, growing the board. Tiles come in five colors, representing diverse soil types needed for mushroom growth. If a tile shows an insect, it must be placed immediately and can only be collected by a mother mycelium.
  • Spore Spread from a mother mushroom or mature mushroom. The number of spores is indicated on the card, and their direction on the board is determined by rolling a wind direction die.
  • Growth of a mushroom shown on a card, provided the tile has enough connected spores forming a mycelium network.
  • Decay lets you remove a mushroom that has spread spores twice, granting bonuses like instant actions, game upgrades, or mushroom enhancements. Move the mushroom card under your board and remove its token from the field.
  • Replenish allows you to draw a mushroom card to your hand.

The game ends when one player has a decayed mushroom card under each of their boards. Players tally points for mature and placed mushrooms, plus insect tokens. The highest scorer wins.
