The Meiji era dawns in Japan. The country has restored trade ties with Western nations, transforming the quiet fishing village of Yokohama into a pivotal hub of Japanese commerce. Trading ships sail abroad and return, bringing foreign technologies and culture into the land. A wave of modernization sweeps through Japan, and Yokohama’s merchants ride its crest.
Game Overview
"Yokohama" is an economic Eurogame featuring worker placement, set collection, a modular board, and hidden objectives. Across a session, 2 to 4 players compete for glory as merchants, investing money, acquiring goods, adopting new technologies, and expanding a network of shops and trading houses throughout the city.
Rules of "Yokohama"
Players take turns starting with the first player. The game continues until one of the endgame conditions is met. Then, one final round is played, followed by the tallying of final scores.
During their turn, the active player performs actions at locations, which form a pyramid of dual-layered tiles as described in the rulebook. Your main action consists of these steps:
- Placement. Place up to three assistants across different locations or two assistants on a single location.
- Movement. Move your president token to another location or return it to your hand.
- Location Action. Activate the location where your president stands.
- Bonus Step for 5 Action Points (if possible), granting an additional reward.
- Build a Shop or Trading House (optional step).
- Retrieval. Return all assistants to your hand.
Activating locations and collecting resources requires your president and at least one worker to be present. Each location yields unique resources: local or imported goods, yen, technology or order cards, shop or trading house tokens, or exchanges. To determine the amount of resources you can gather, calculate your action points: the president and each worker contribute 1 point, plus bonuses from shops, trading houses, or station tokens.
Before or after your main action, you may also in any order:
- Use a trade agent (once per turn).
- Complete any number of achievements.
- Fulfill any number of orders.
End of Game
The game ends when at least one of these conditions is met:
- A player has built all 4 of their trading houses.
- A player has built all 8 of their shops.
- There aren’t enough order cards to fill empty slots on the “Port” management board.
- The “Church” and “Customs” management boards are fully occupied by assistants.

We recommend watching the video rules in the “Video” section and, if desired, reviewing the detailed PDF rules in the “Files” section.
One Last Note
In this updated 2024 edition of "Yokohama" (first released in 2016), the designer not only refined the gameplay and added two mini-expansions—“Achievement Award Tokens” and “Independent Merchant Tokens”—but also enhanced the production. Inside the box, you’ll find a wealth of dual-layered boards, meeples with stunning prints, vibrant artwork, and a convenient organizer. Gallu the Rooster recommends this game for all fans of complex European-style game design and those unbothered by downtime (waiting between turns), as even seasoned players are guaranteed moments of analytical paralysis during play.
We also suggest checking out a complex Eurogame for seasoned board game enthusiasts—"Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory". This game simulates societal processes and the interplay of four asymmetrical classes, built on principles mirroring real-world societies, all driven by a card-based engine.
