The Mysteries of Karak Castle is a classic dungeon crawler for kids, where you’ll embark on adventures through endless labyrinths, battle monsters, collect treasure chests, and be the first to take down the dragon boss. Released in 2017 by designer Petr Mikša, "Karak" currently ranks 11th among the best children’s board games worldwide, having won accolades such as "2018 Children’s Game of the Year" and "2023 Geek Media Awards Children’s Game of the Year Winner."
About the Board Game Karak
Once a majestic stronghold, Karak Castle has fallen into ruin over time, its corridors shrouded in darkness and now home to spiders, skeletons, rats, and mummies. The castle’s dungeons hide countless treasures, with the most valuable guarded personally by the dragon lord. No one dares approach the castle, but six brave heroes are ready to challenge these monsters and claim the chests. Each has their own story and motive, but only one will seize Karak’s coveted riches!
Gameplay
From two to five adventurers take turns uncovering dungeon tiles, using mysterious portals, tapping healing fountains, defeating monsters, and collecting gear. At the start, each player chooses one of six unique heroes, receives a personal inventory board, and a starting dungeon tile is placed at the center of the table. On their turn, a player has four steps and can:
- Explore the dungeon by drawing a tile and placing it so the corridors align (like a puzzle), ideally avoiding dead ends. If it’s a corridor, it costs one step; if it’s a room, a token is drawn from the bag. A chest token can be claimed with the right key, but a monster token triggers a fight.
- Engage in combat. To determine the outcome, roll two dice, add the strength of your equipment, and compare it to the monster’s strength. Don’t forget each hero’s spells or special abilities (two per hero). Combat can end in:
- Victory. You gain the item depicted on the token (weapon, scroll, key, or treasure) and place it on your board.
- Defeat. Your hero retreats and takes one wound.
- Draw. Your hero retreats unharmed.
- Move through explored dungeon corridors.
The game ends immediately after the dragon—holder of the most valuable treasure worth 1.5 victory points (regular treasures grant 1 point)—is defeated. However, the winner isn’t the one who slays the boss, but the hero who amasses the most treasures.
We recommend checking out the video rules in the "Video" section and, if desired, exploring a more detailed, illustrated version of the rules in PDF format in the "Files" section.
In Conclusion
"Karak" offers wild replayability since the dungeon never repeats, and the dragon might lurk in the very first room by the entrance. Simple rules, quick turns, and heroes with fun, accessible mechanics make this one of the best games for kids. From his own experience—having played around three dozen games—Gallu the Rooster recommends it for kids from age six and notes that adults love it too, rolling dice and shredding skeletons to unwind after a tough day.
