“Karak II: Secrets of the Castle” is an adventure board game that continues the story of one of the best dungeon-crawlers for kids, where you’ll battle monsters, explore lands, and claim rewards. It’s fully standalone, so you don’t need to play “Karak: Secrets of the Castle” to enjoy it. This second installment, designed by Petr Mikša in 2023, builds on the original with more complex mechanics while remaining approachable for games with kids.
About the Board Game Karak II
After the dragon ravaging the lands around the castle fell, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But the triumph was short-lived. Whether by chance or design, the dragon may have been guarding the world from something far worse—a hellish abyss has opened in the earth. From it pour hordes of horrific creatures led by the Dark General.
No one can face this horde alone, so our heroes must build cities, hire warrior squads, and gather resources. Alongside the monsters, mysterious soul stones have emerged, capable of granting wishes—and the one who collects the most can fulfill their own grand ambition.
Gameplay
Before the adventure begins, each player picks one of six heroes with unique abilities and gets a personal player board. On your turn, you can take two actions (or more with upgrades). Heroes can move across explored tiles or reveal new ones, but movement only happens before an action. The game offers eight actions:
- Fighting monsters involves rolling your hero’s dice and squad dice. Add equipment strength to your roll and compare it to the monster’s level. Win, and you claim the reward on the token’s back; lose, and retreat to the previous tile. Monster tokens are drawn randomly from a bag when revealing new tiles.
- Healing restores two health points.
- Gathering resources from monster-free tiles—wood, stone, or food.
- Building cities and structures with resources. Build a city on an empty space, then construct buildings with various effects while in your city.
- Hiring squads from a city tile with specific buildings. Pay their resource cost to gain extra dice for knights, archers, or mages.
- Picking up dropped items left by another hero.
- Cleansing plague in your city. This special action, only doable at the starting Karak castle tile, fully restores your health. Plague can be inflicted by another player—if you roll two skull symbols in combat, you lose health and place a plague token on a city, forcing it to discard one of each resource and blocking new squad hires.
- Falling unconscious from zero health means your next turn is spent recovering—restore 3 health points and end your turn without actions.
Exploring new tiles might uncover the Hellish Abyss, spawning the Dark General and his praetorians (their number scales with players). The game ends immediately once he’s defeated. But victory doesn’t go to the boss-slayer—it’s the hero with the most soul stones who wins.

One Last Note
Unlike the first game, “Karak II” is a bit more complex, but its quick turns and light sessions still make it great for family nights with kids and adults. Galu the Rooster assures you’ll be thrilled with the new mechanics—especially if you’ve played the original “Karak,” this one’s a must-have!
