Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together fabric scraps to create a true composition. Once used to make clothing and blankets from leftover fabric, patchwork has evolved into an art form where designers use precious textiles to craft unique pieces. By stitching together patches of various shapes, you can create a genuine masterpiece, making this technique a favorite among artists.
Crafting a beautiful quilt takes time and effort, especially if the patches don’t naturally fit together. So, choose your pieces carefully and stock up on buttons to ensure your quilt isn’t just complete but outshines your rival’s.
About the Board Game "Patchwork: Ukrainian Folklore"
This is an abstract two-player game by legendary game designer Uwe Rosenberg, featuring patches inspired by Ukrainian folklore. Its simple rules and quick sessions, paired with engaging mosaic-style gameplay, have earned high praise from players and critics worldwide. It currently ranks 4th among abstract games of all time on the authoritative BoardGameGeek site.
Rules of "Patchwork: Ukrainian Folklore"
In this game, players don’t always take turns sequentially. The player whose time marker is farthest back on the time track takes their turn. This means one player might take several turns in a row. If both time markers are on the same space, the player whose marker is on top goes next.
On your turn, perform one of two actions:
1. Advance and Collect Buttons
Move your time marker forward on the time track until it lands on the space just before your opponent’s marker. You receive one button token for each space you pass.
2. Take and Place a Patch
This action consists of 5 steps, which you must complete in this order:
- You may choose 1 of the 3 patches in front of the neutral token. If they’re too costly or you don’t want them, you must advance and collect buttons instead.
- Place the neutral token next to the chosen patch.
- Pay the indicated number of buttons.
- Place the patch on your quilt board. Patches cannot overlap.
- Move your time marker forward on the time track by the number of spaces shown on the patch’s cost tag. If your marker lands on the same space as your opponent’s, place yours on top.
Time Track
Certain spaces on the time track feature icons. When you pass them, you gain these bonuses:
- A special patch, allowing you to “fill” empty single spaces on your quilt board.
- Buttons equal to the number shown on the patches on your quilt board.
The first player to fill a 7×7 square on their quilt board also earns a special tile worth 7 points.
Endgame and Scoring
The game ends when both time markers reach the final space on the time track. Count your remaining buttons and add the value of the special tile (if you have it). Subtract 2 points for each empty space on your quilt board.
The player with the most points wins.
