Cascadia is a family abstract board game featuring tile placement mechanics and simple rules centered on building the ecosystem of a famous nature reserve. Designed by Randy Flynn in 2021, this debut project by the game designer has soared to success. "Cascadia" has triumphantly claimed first place among abstract games, ranks in the Top 10 family board games, and sits within the Top 50 overall board games according to Board Game Geek. The game boasts 35 international awards and nominations, including notable titles like "Meeples' Choice 2021 Winner," "2021 Golden Geek Light Game of the Year Winner," "2022 American Tabletop Strategy Games Winner," "2022 Game of the Year," "Best Family Game 2023/2024," and many more.
About the Board Game Cascadia
You’ve been given the chance to craft the landscape of the Cascadia bioregion, located along the Pacific coast of North America. Arrange mountains, forests, and rivers, populating them with bears, deer, foxes, and other wildlife, as if you were Mother Nature herself.
Gameplay
The game begins by randomly selecting goal cards, and each player receives one starting tile for their habitat. Four combinations of habitat tiles and animal tokens are drawn from a bag and placed on the table, forming the game’s market area. On their turn, a player must:
- Choose a combination of a habitat tile and an animal token from the market. Using nature tokens, players can refresh the tiles and tokens by drawing new ones from the bag or select any habitat and animal regardless of the pairing.
- Add the tile to their ecosystem and place the animal. The tile must be placed adjacent to at least one previously laid tile. Animal tokens can be placed on an unoccupied tile with a matching symbol. Additionally, when placing an animal, the player earns a nature token; if placement isn’t possible, the token returns to the bag.
The turn ends here: a new habitat tile and animal token are drawn from the bag to replenish the market, and play passes to the next player. The game continues until the last tile is drawn, with victory points awarded for skillful combinations of natural zones and animals, adjacency of fauna, and the largest area of each habitat type.

In Conclusion
It’s no surprise that "Cascadia" has garnered so many awards and nominations. It offers an ideal blend of easy gameplay and brain-teasing strategy, a stellar solo mode, and a variety of play options (from family-friendly to scenario-based). With no downtime (waiting for turns) or direct conflict (each player builds their own ecosystem), stunning illustrations, and high-quality wooden components, it’s a standout. That’s why Gallu the Rooster insists you try this atmospheric masterpiece—perfect for playing with family, kids, or anyone at all.
