Congratulations on your promotion—you’re now a Starship Captain! Sure, the ship’s a bit battered, and your crew consists of green recruits, but incredible adventures await, and together you’ll overcome any challenge. Hurry up and get ready—cosmic pirates and ancient androids on the verge of falling apart don’t like to be kept waiting.
The Game Starship Captains
“Starship Captains” is a cosmic Euro-strategy game and a breathtaking interplanetary adventure packed into one box. Vibrant design, a fresh mix of mechanics, and a galaxy of witty sci-fi references will captivate genre fans and casual players alike, whether gathering with family or friends. Command your crew, upgrade your ship, and tackle missions of varying difficulty to become the galaxy’s top captain!
Gameplay
Start by prepping your starship and meeting your crew. Your player board, beyond its handy slots for components, features four compartments: navigation, gunnery, science, and repair—each tied to red, yellow, blue, and gray crew figures. On your turn, the captain picks one of three actions: activate a compartment, complete a mission, or rescue.
Red pilots zip you across space to any planet, yellow gunners load the cannons to fend off pirates, blue engineers research tech to upgrade the ship mid-flight, and gray cadets stick to repairs—but they’ve got bright futures in the fleet. For now, these folks handle simple tasks one at a time. Train them up, though, and you’ll be amazed at their potential!
Multitasking commanders step in to juggle multiple jobs at once. Tired crew? Send them to the rest queue on your ship’s board. When all workers finish their shifts and every player passes, the round ends, and the colorful crew line shifts forward. Whoosh—your team’s back in action! But watch out: all figures in the queue return except the last three. Manage your crew’s order, promote new commanders in time, and chain clever combos to delight any starship captain.
Speaking of combos, the tech board ties directly to the science bay—and it’s damaged from the start. Fixing it is worth the effort: every cannon, engine, restroom, or even an AI coffee maker boosts your ship and grants a bonus upon installation. Plan your tech research ahead, leave some slots open, then strike when the perfect card combo appears. You could build your engine from scratch, but focusing solely on that leaves little time or resources for missions and faction tracks. What’s the move? Here’s that classic, agonizing choice Euro games love to throw at you.
Players take quick turns in a circle, keeping the game flowing at near-lightspeed. Before you know it, four rounds are done, and it’s time to tally victory points. Per galactic tradition, the highest scorer wins, but everyone gets a personal epilogue to debate whose ending reigns supreme. “Starship Captains” has minimal direct conflict or sabotage, making it family-friendly. Still, sometimes a captain needs solitude to think—or play solo. In solo mode, you’ll face a virtual rival, Captain Shadow, plus a VIP passenger who brings both bonuses and headaches.
