“All rise! Court is in session!” the clerk announced. “The case of Newland v. Guy Johnson is now in hearing. Civil Action No. 1:11-00028.” The prosecutor is dead serious: “I know Guy Johnson is guilty, and it’s my job to prove it to the jury!”
The Game Voices In My Head
“Voices In My Head” is a board game for 3 to 6 players featuring asymmetrical, semi-hidden roles. Well, almost hidden— one player takes on the Prosecutor, tasked with proving Guy Johnson’s guilt, while the others play as voices in the defendant’s mind, each with a secret goal known only to themselves.
Gameplay
Players start by receiving role cards detailing their personal win condition, which they must achieve by game’s end to claim victory. Multiple winners are possible—including alongside the Prosecutor, whose unchanging goal is to lock Guy Johnson behind bars.
The game board represents areas of Guy’s brain, which players vie to control by placing influence tokens (the Prosecutor included). This lets them sway the jury and shape the trial’s outcome. The game spans 8 rounds, ending with the reading of a verdict card.
The Prosecutor has a screen to hide their court cards from others. These cards feature a snippet of trial narrative with multiple outcome options, plus symbols of brain areas tied to that card’s decision. First, the Prosecutor picks a court card to play without revealing its text, then announces which brain area symbols it involves.
Once all players have moved their control tokens, the Prosecutor reads the chosen court card aloud. These cards affect the jury, placing guilty or innocent tokens on them—usually by the player controlling the relevant brain area. Control is determined by the total value of a player’s tokens in that area. After play, the card is discarded, and the Prosecutor draws a new one, keeping 3 open cards behind their screen to choose from each turn.
As mentioned earlier, victory can be shared. Each voice in Guy’s head has a unique goal—like controlling the most brain areas while ensuring Guy’s conviction, or ending with no control tokens and securing his acquittal.
