An epic tabletop clash between the forces of the Free Peoples and the Darkness doesn’t necessarily have to take up an entire table or end "on the fifth day with the first light of dawn." Here is a card-based strategy game that is more compact and dynamic than War of the Ring but immerses you just as deeply into the grand events of your favorite fantasy trilogy. This small box will require just a couple of hours of your time but will leave impressions as if you had undertaken a full-fledged journey to Mordor, with all the key battles included. It’s sure to delight fans of tactical strategies and the enchanting series while also introducing newcomers to the world of Middle-earth and serious card games.
About the game
Players on the side of Light will take command of the Free Peoples' forces while helping Frodo and his friends carry the One Ring to Mordor. Their opponents will lead the armies of Darkness in a bid to conquer Middle-earth, spreading fear and terror in an attempt to weaken Frodo's resolve and force him to succumb to the Ring's magic. Players will explore various locations and engage in fierce battles, summoning armies led by their respective leaders. But can you accurately calculate your strength, predict your opponent's actions, and withstand random events and powerful magical artifacts?
Since this is the card game version of War of the Ring, you won’t find a huge board or a multitude of miniatures in the box. This game is remarkable for its concise design, with all the cards divided into two main groups: locations and factions. Middle-earth location cards guide us through the captivating story of J.R.R. Tolkien, presenting two parallel storylines of The Lord of the Rings. Throughout the game, fierce battles unfold on the battlefields between the Free Peoples and the forces of Darkness, while Frodo and his companions make their way to Mordor with the One Ring.
At the start of each round, a battlefield is randomly activated, belonging either to the forces of Darkness or the Free Peoples, which means you'll need to defend or attack accordingly. The Fellowship Path card is also revealed on the table but in a more controlled manner, as these cards are numbered, and the path from the Shire to Mount Doom is geographically determined, though fraught with deadly obstacles. This is where faction cards come into play, engaging in battles, gaining the upper hand, and earning victory points.
Each player will receive their own unique deck led by Frodo, Aragorn, Saruman, or the Witch-king. The thirty cards in your hand represent powerful armies, familiar characters, magical items, and vivid events from the original hobbit tale. Send Rivendell's archers into battle, command Saruman to lead the Isengard army, summon Gandalf the White, and equip Frodo with an elven cloak.
Gameplay
A game of War of the Ring: The Card Game lasts 9 rounds, during which players will take turns playing character, army, item, and event cards. Each card will influence the course of the War of the Ring in its own way. This action will take place in different locations where significant battles will unfold.
The key focus of the game is the battle for one of the Fellowship Path cards and fortresses. The most famous locations will be conquered during battles and will earn victory points for the winners.
The rules offer several modes—team, duel, and several scenarios. If there are three or four players, they are divided into teams of Sauron and Saruman on one side and Frodo and the Free Peoples on the other. This ensures a unique gaming experience with thematic and atmospheric design.
The exceptional illustrations for the board game War of the Ring: The Card Game were created by professional and well-known artists, making the game a collectible item.
