About the Game
Take on the role of Caesar or Pompey and send your legions to various corners of the future empire. Fierce battles for power unfold at the borders of regions, where players alternately place their influence tokens. Did you manage to surround Sardinia with your troops? Great, claim a province bonus token. Do you have more influence in the conquered territory? Excellent, place your control token there. It all sounds simple, and it seems like the Roman goddess of victory, Victoria, is already flying towards you with a laurel wreath. But don’t celebrate just yet—your opponent will be doing the same. Who will be the first to distribute all their influence tokens and become the sole ruler?
Game Process
The game starts slowly. Your moves are cautious, you make probing advances, rarely capturing regions, and you intensely scrutinize your opponent's screen, trying to figure out what they’re hiding. While your brain feverishly searches for a dozen backup options, somewhere to the south, enemy tokens have encircled Syria and Egypt. One wrong move, one mistake, and you find yourself drawn into a chain of battles leading to a rapid climax, leaving one of you with an unforgettable taste of victory, and the other with a sense of unresolved frustration and a burning desire for a rematch.
The rules can be explained in just a couple of minutes, and a game rarely takes more than half an hour. You can set up a marathon, where the ultimate champion is determined, or add some intensity by using a chess clock.
At its core, Caesar! is a perfectly balanced abstract strategy game on the brink of a wargame, with minimalist design and no overwhelming components. All you have are colorful screens and bags, tokens with clear infographics, and a schematic game board where an ambitious struggle for power unfolds, from which you’ll be eager to emerge victorious.
