“Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fear of the Unknown” is a standalone sequel to the cooperative action board game for 1–5 players based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft “Cthulhu: Death May Die”, so you do not need the base game.
The standalone expansion “Fear of the Unknown” allows you to mix it with the base game to your taste, revealing the game in countless possible combinations of investigators, Ancient Ones and scenarios.
Gameplay
Players take on the roles of investigators and join forces to fight. You can only win together, just as you can only lose together. The goal in every game is the same: interrupt the ritual and defeat the Ancient One.
Each player’s turn consists of sequential phases:
- Perform 3 actions from the possible ones: run, attack enemies, rest, exchange discoveries, perform episode actions.
- Play a Mythos card that adds new enemies to the board and brings the summoning of the Ancient One closer.
- Explore a safe zone or suffer an attack from enemies in a dangerous one.
- Apply end-of-turn effects.
A New Season of the Hit Board Game
Meet 6 new Episodes and 2 new Ancient Ones that add new madness and monsters, as well as new modular rules.
The highlight of the game is the Unknown mechanic. It consists of two main elements:
- Unknown monsters.
- Unknown relics.
Unknown monsters cause problems for the investigators by activating additional effects similar to those of the Ancient One. Relics, on the contrary, make the players’ lives easier right from the start of the game, and with the first sips of madness they gain more powerful properties.
According to the standard rules, 2 Unknown monsters and one Unknown relic for each investigator participate in the game at the same time. In addition to the standard variant, there are various combinations that allow you to conveniently adjust the difficulty of the game to your taste. In total this gives 4 different difficulty levels:
- Easiest level — using Unknown relics without monsters.
- Easy level — using relics and 1 monster.
- Standard level — using relics and 2 monsters.
- Hard level — using monsters without relics.
We recommend watching the video rules in the “Video” section and, if desired, studying the rules in more detail in PDF format in the “Files” section.
One last note
Galu the Rooster is confident that among all games based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, “Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fear of the Unknown” is considered the fastest and easiest (in terms of rules) game for beginners.
And if you want to play cooperative games based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, but you are still bothered by the use of an app or you are a fan of this series of games, then pay attention to the board games “Eldritch Horror”, “Arkham Horror Third Edition”, “Mansions of Madness Second Edition” and “Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Revised Edition”.
