“Port Royal” is a thrilling game for 1-5 players that whisks you into the vibrant world of Jamaica! We’re not here to relax, though—your goal is to get rich and rise to prominence. Assemble a crew of salty sea dogs, trade with overseas powers, battle pirate galleons, and outfit expeditions to uncharted isles. Dive into pirate romance and breathe the tangy scent of distant seas with the board game “Port Royal”!
Gameplay
When it’s your turn, you go through two phases:
- Discovery Phase - You reveal the top card from the deck and place it in the center, forming the Harbor. From there, it’s up to you—keep revealing cards or stop whenever you like. But beware: if two ships of the same color end up in the Harbor, your turn ends immediately, skipping the second phase, and play passes to the next player. Different card types trigger events: Ship cards in the Harbor yield gold but can be sunk to avoid duplicates and losing your turn. Character cards join the Harbor for use in the next phase. Expedition cards sit apart, awaiting a player to fulfill them. Tax cards strip gold from the wealthiest and offer a little to the rest. You decide when to stop and move to the next phase.
- Trade Phase - Here, the active player can take up to three cards from the Harbor (based on their Discovery success), while others take one each. Send Ships to the discard pile for gold, or buy Character cards with gold to keep them, gaining special abilities.
Play passes to the next player, and the phases repeat.
The game ends when a player reaches twelve victory points. That round becomes the last, played out fully, followed by a final score tally—the highest wins. An alternate endgame rule requires not just twelve points but also a completed Expedition.
