Bunny Kingdom is a strategic family board game blending card drafting and territory control mechanics. Created in 2017 by game designer Richard Garfield, known for titles like King of Tokyo, King of New York, Magic: The Gathering, KeyForge, and Mind Bug: First Contact, Bunny Kingdom has earned numerous awards and nominations. It currently ranks in the top 100 family board games on the authoritative BoardGameGeek site.
The game features high-quality city miniatures and adorable rabbit figures. The detailed, cartoon-style card illustrations of baby bunnies and the game board, drawn by renowned artist Paul Mafayon, deserve special mention and make the game utterly charming.
About the Board Game Bunny Kingdom
From 2 to 4 rabbit lords set out to conquer unknown lands, expanding the realm of the most gracious King Longears. You’ll build cities, fish, grow carrots, and mine precious resources. Don’t forget to fulfill the king’s whims—only wise and calculated decisions lead to victory. Just one lord among you will earn the noble title of “Big Ears.”
How to Play?
The rules are easy to grasp, even for newcomers to board gaming. Since this is a card-driven game, let’s focus on the cards. There are four types. First, territory cards—100 in total, matching the grid spaces on the board. Playing these expands your domain by sending a rabbit to the corresponding board coordinate, be it carrot fields, fish-filled rivers, timber forests, cities, mountains, or plains.
Supply cards let you draw two extra cards from the deck. Building cards allow you to construct sky towers, farms, cities, camps, and trading posts. Parchment cards are secret royal missions that yield golden carrots at final scoring, based on whether you met their conditions.
The game unfolds over four rounds, each split into three phases.
Exploration Phase
A classic draft. Depending on player count, each rabbit lord receives a set number of cards (drafting rules differ slightly for two players). Players pick just two cards from their hand and pass the rest to their neighbor. This continues until no cards remain. Territory or supply cards are played immediately by all players; only then can you look at the cards passed by your neighbor and choose the next two. Parchment cards go face-down in front of you, while building cards are placed face-up with their matching token or city figure.
Construction Phase
Here, you may build structures gained in the first phase, but you’re not required to. You can only build on your own territory, as marked on the card, with a limit of one structure per space.
Harvest Phase
This phase tallies golden carrots from fiefs. A fief is a connected territory or group of territories linked horizontally or vertically. To score, multiply the fief’s strength (number of city towers) by the variety of resources within that fief.
After the harvest phase of the fourth round, players reveal their parchment cards and earn golden carrots for them. The player with the most victory points is declared the winner.
