Description of 7 Wonders (2nd Edition)
From three to seven players take on the role of a leader of a grand ancient city. Across three eras-rounds, you must develop your city by expanding it, forging trade agreements, making scientific discoveries, embarking on military campaigns, and constructing magnificent Wonders of the World.
Gameplay
Before the game begins, each player receives three coins and randomly draws one Wonder board card. Then, all players are dealt seven cards, and the draft (card selection) begins.
The draft in 7 Wonders is the core mechanic of the game, eliminating random card draws. Players select the card they want and play it simultaneously. The remaining cards are passed around the table over six turns, depending on the current era (clockwise or counterclockwise). On the sixth turn, with two cards left, one is chosen, and the other is discarded. The simultaneous card play is the game’s "highlight," as this mechanic ensures no downtime (waiting for turns), regardless of the number of players.
After playing a card, a player can take one of three actions:
- Build a structure in their city, paying the cost in coins and resources indicated on the card (some structures are free). If resources are lacking, they can be purchased for two coins.
- Construct a stage of a Wonder, paying its cost and placing the card face-down under the corresponding stage of the Wonder board.
- Discard the card to gain three coins.
End of an Era
Each era concludes with the resolution of military conflicts. Players tally the number of military symbols on their red cards and compare them with each neighbor. If your military strength is lower, you receive a defeat token; if equal, nothing happens; if higher, you earn victory tokens based on the era.
After resolving military conflicts in the third era, the game ends, and players calculate their points using a notepad. The player with the highest score is declared the winner.
