“7 Wonders: Cities” is not a standalone game but an expansion to the strategic card-based board game “7 Wonders (2nd Edition)”. It introduces a team mode for 4 or 6 players, new mechanics like loans and diplomacy, plus additional era cards and Wonders.
A Closer Look at the Expansion
Victory conditions remain unchanged, as does the gameplay flow, aside from the new rules. With the addition of new cards, players now receive eight cards per hand instead of seven, granting everyone an extra turn in each era.
Black era cards—new city building cards—feature a coin loss symbol. Players decide whether to pay the coins or take debt tokens equal to the amount owed. You can opt for debt even with enough coins in reserve, but debt tokens cannot be returned later and deduct victory points at game’s end for each one held.
Certain black cards and the new Byzantium Wonder provide diplomacy tokens. This new mechanic lets a player sit out military conflicts at the end of an era, forcing their two neighbors to battle each other instead.
We recommend watching the video rules in the “Video” section and, if desired, exploring the illustrated PDF rules in the “Files” section.
One Last Note
Gallu the Rooster recommends this expansion to all fans of the base game, as it deepens the gameplay experience without overhauling the core rules.
