The "Lords of Middle-earth" expansion focuses on characters—introducing new heroes from the iconic saga alongside alternate versions of characters from the base game.
The Free Peoples of the West gain a major boost with three Ring-bearers (one of whom we already know well from the base game). Gandalf the Grey, Lord Elrond, and Lady Galadriel—bearers of the mighty Elven Rings—can turn the tide of the battle for Middle-earth. But beware: these Rings are tied to their creator, so their power should not be overused.
Elrond and Galadriel enter as characters with unique abilities. When they appear in the game (and while Gandalf the Grey guides the Fellowship), the Free Peoples gain extra action dice distinct from the standard ones.
The Dark Forces Gain Reinforcements Too
Lesser servants of Sauron join the fray: the Balrog and Gothmog.
The Balrog, represented by a miniature, can become a devastating force capable of deciding a battle’s outcome. While the Balrog is in play, the dark forces also receive an additional action die.
Gothmog, a warlord of Sauron’s army, steps into the spotlight. Though given little attention in Tolkien’s works, he now takes center stage in the battle for Middle-earth. A masterful leader, he adds an extra action die to the Dark Lord’s pool, crucial for a swift and decisive military campaign.
Beyond this, the dark forces gain two alternate characters: the Mouth of Sauron and the Witch-king. These new versions of their base-game counterparts come with unique abilities, expanding strategic options.
An alternate Gollum reveals what might have happened if the Fellowship had spotted their pursuer before Moria. This helpful companion aids the Fellowship’s journey to the Fatal Mountain with fewer losses. Yet the Ring’s grip on this wretched creature is so strong that Sauron, using new cards, can also bend him to his will.
The additional "Council of Rivendell" rule lets you imagine how events might have unfolded if some Fellowship members left earlier. The Free Peoples player can split off members during setup to bolster their forces. Plus, the expansion includes alternate versions of all Frodo’s companions. The Free Peoples player can mix these with the base companions in any configuration, without revealing which ones are in the Fellowship.
