Harima Province, Japan, 1761. Daimyo Sakai Tadazumi, one of the most prominent advisors to the Edo Shogunate, rules the region from Himeji Castle. Thus, it’s in the best interests of local clans to gain the favor of the Sakai clan. To achieve influence, family members must infiltrate every level of life at the White Castle—from political roles to military posts, and even humble gardeners tending to every detail in the castle’s gardens.
"The White Castle" is a complex Euro-strategy game with resource management and worker placement mechanics, where dice serve as workers. By allocating them across different areas of the castle, players gain access to specific actions and accumulate victory points.
Players take on the roles of leaders of smaller clans, competing for position and their clan’s future at the court of the White Heron. Clever and timely management of resources and placement of family members in Himeji Castle will be the key to victory!
Gameplay
The game board represents Himeji Castle in all its grandeur, divided into several zones. The largest zone lies within the castle, featuring the Room of a Thousand Tatamis, where courtiers climb the social ladder to join the daimyo’s inner circle and earn his favor.
There’s also the pond and gardens, meticulously cultivated by local gardeners, where anyone can relax and enjoy their unparalleled beauty. Another key area is the castle wall and exterior, where warriors patrol and stand guard.
Finally, there’s the zone of three bridges, where three types of dice are collected to perform actions, and each player’s personal area, where they track resources and maintain a reserve of workers.

We recommend watching the video rules in the “Video” section and, if desired, reviewing the illustrated PDF rules in detail in the “Files” section.
One Last Note
Galu the Rooster recommends "The White Castle" to fans of deep yet concise Eurogames for 1–4 players. The game strikes a perfect balance of mechanics—dice rolling, worker placement, and resource management. It’s a prime example of a small box packing a full-fledged Eurogame, earning its place in the BGG Top 100.
We also suggest checking out the board game "Grand Austria Hotel". This excellent Eurogame tasks players with developing their own hotel business. Starting as owners of small hostels with just 10 crowns of capital, players work to elevate their hostel to the level of Austria’s grandest hotel.
