As the days pass, the struggle for power and justice in the forest shows no signs of stopping! Many forest dwellers have become exiles in their homeland... But the Lizard Cult is ready to offer them refuge in their sacred gardens. In their hissing, the exiles hear promises of restored justice. Meanwhile, the war has also sparked a demand for mercenary services. The Riverfolk Company is ready to lend a helping hand to anyone willing to pay the right price!
About the Expansion
The game time with this expansion is approximately 1.5 hours, and it allows for a player count of one to six.
Three new Vagabond characters offer more choices for playing as the Vagabond, and an additional pawn and player board allow two Vagabonds to participate in the same game.
New Faction — The Lizard Cult: They spread the faith in the Dragon God throughout the forest and persecute all those who oppose them. The Cult's abilities heavily depend on the actions of other players and the cards they play during their turns. However, thanks to the secret knowledge obtained from their wise god, the Cult does not discard cards to perform actions but simply reveals them to other players.
New Faction — The Riverfolk Company: Hearing about the war in the forest, the Riverfolk quickly set up a small business on the riverbank, offering their services to anyone interested. Of course, not for free. The Riverfolk is another faction whose abilities are directly influenced by the actions of other players. By charging warriors from the players' reserves, they sell them cards from their hand, provide river transportation through the forest, and offer the services of hired warriors.
Solo and Cooperative Modes
The Mechanical Marquise replaces a real player and adds a cooperative mode and solo mode to the game, allowing you to face it one-on-one or team up with friends.
It's worth noting that although the game introduces more factions, it remains fully asymmetric, and all factions interact well with each other. However, less experienced players might find the two new factions slightly more challenging to learn and manage, partly because they rely on player interactions.
All these modes are not mandatory for a complete Root experience but only expand the possibilities of the base game. The game's designer and Root experts recommend the factions from the expansion and the 2-Vagabond mode only for experienced players who are well-versed in all the factions of the base game.
And yes, now you can play not only with 2 to 4 participants but also enjoy a solo game in peaceful solitude or gather 5 or even 6 friends for a grand forest battle!
Undoubtedly, The Riverfolk Expansion will appeal to those who have already mastered all aspects of the base game.
