About the Game “Stuffed Fables”
“Stuffed Fables” is a cooperative adventure game-book (over 100 pages) with high-quality miniatures. Players take on the roles of brave toys striving to save the girl they adore from a cunning villain. Rolling colorful dice, players perform all sorts of actions: engaging in epic battles, overcoming obstacles, interacting with the quirky inhabitants of this unusual world, and much more. The game board? A unique storybook that doubles as a rule reference and a collection of narrative tales.
Designed by Jerry Hawthorne in 2018, “Stuffed Fables” comes from the mind behind the acclaimed adventure board game “Mice and Mystics”.
Gameplay Overview
The game begins on a big day for a little girl: she’s moving from a crib to a grown-up bed. Now, her peace is threatened by the Nightmare King, lord of bad dreams. Each night, her plush toys must fend off the villain’s minions while unraveling the secrets of a mysterious realm populated by lost toys—known as “stufflings.” Pick your favorite plush, equip it with makeshift gear, and dive into a grand tale that touches on heartfelt life themes and childhood memories!
The plush characters you embody aren’t just bundles of skills and traits—they’re full-fledged personalities. Some join you from the storybook’s opening pages; others you’ll meet as the campaign unfolds. They complement each other, because without teamwork and friendship, success is out of reach!
Most game mechanics revolve around seven colored dice. At the start of your turn, you blindly draw 5 from a bag. White dice restore stuffing (health), black dice activate minions, and the rest fuel actions. Each color ties to a specific move: roll red for an attack, yellow to search, and so on.
Your actions are limited only by your dice pool. But it’s not as chaotic as it might seem:
- Dice can be saved between turns.
- Purple dice act as wild cards.
- Many abilities and items let you tweak dice results.
The “dice-driven” system is balanced to keep each turn exciting and distinct while ensuring you can complete your goals.
You’ll often face group decisions and choices that shape future events. Whether to tackle “side quests” is up to you, and you usually pick how to approach each chapter. This freedom extends to encounters with stufflings—the lost toys of this magical world. When you meet one, a teammate reveals their card and reads the scenario aloud; you choose from the listed options, but the outcome stays hidden until you decide.
The world of “Stuffed Fables” shines not just through its constant action but also your ability to influence it with every choice, making you feel like part of its fabric.
