Borscht is a family card-based board game where you’ll cook an authentic Ukrainian dish using recipes from various corners of our homeland. Designed in 2024 by Ukrainian game designer Oleksandr Kuksin, the creator of the popular game "The Car Dealer" (UA).
About the Board Game Borscht
Though UNESCO has recognized borscht as cultural heritage, every family and household has its own twist and flavor. Green borscht, with meatballs, dumplings and kvass, Odessa-style borscht, with smoked pear, and many other intriguing combinations—this game invites you to compete in mastering borscht recipes.
A Quick Look at the Rules
From two to seven players start the game by receiving three recipes, secretly keeping one. Each player also gets five ingredient cards. Eight ingredient cards are placed face-down on the table, forming a market, with the rest of the deck nearby.
On your turn, choose one of four actions:
- Add an ingredient to your borscht by playing cards in front of you.
- Take two cards from the deck into your hand.
- Trade ingredients from your hand for market cards, based on their value.
- Play a special ingredient and trigger its effect. Toss a red pepper into a rival’s borscht, forcing them to discard played cards; cancel the pepper with sour cream; or gain extra cards with spices.
Once a player completes their recipe’s ingredients, the game ends, and opponents get one final turn. The chef with the most victory points wins.
“Cracklings” Mini-Expansion
Spice up your borscht-making with unexpected mishaps. Take three to eight crackling cards and shuffle them blindly into the ingredient deck. They activate at the end of the drawing player’s turn, with instant or ongoing effects.
We recommend watching the video rules in the “Video” section and, if desired, exploring the illustrated PDF rules in the “Files” section.
